NORTH BY NORTHWEST CABERNET SAUVIGNON 2014

Description and Flavor Profile: The Columbia Valley was Washington’s first AVA and it is still the largest. Washington’s wine county is blessed with a terroir of abundant sunshine. Sharing the same 46º latitude as Burgundy and Bordeaux, the combination of Washington’s warm days, crisp cool evenings and well-draining, sandy soils yield grapes with a perfect ripeness and acidity critical for the crafting of world-class wine. This idyllic terroir allows the region to produce wines that are both fruit forward and structured.

Following on the heels of a cold winter in 2014, early spring was very wet with double our typical precipitation in March. Rapidly warming temperatures in April led to bud break a week early. These favorable conditions continued, leading to very strong fruit set after the mid-June bloom. The abundance of fruit allowed for meticulous hand thinning; only fruit meeting stringent quality parameters was allowed to ripen. In late summer/early fall the grape clusters were in outstanding condition which combined with unusually dry conditions allowed for extended hang time and enhanced flavor development. The extended harvest period enabled each vineyard to be harvested at peak ripenes resulting in a crop of fantastic quality. The 2014 Cabernet Sauvignon has a dark crimson color with ruby edges. It is a well structured wine, with flavors of cassis, fresh blackberry and chocolate framed by vanilla and toasty oak. Enjoy now until at least 2032.

The Process: Fruit for the 2014 Columbia Valley Cabernet Sauvignon was cold soaked for extraction, then punched down and pumped over. For optimum flavor and body, the grapes underwent delestage, and saw an extended maceration. This Cabernet Sauvignon saw 18 months in French and American oak barrels, 35% of which were new.
